Evening Star

Evening StarEvening Star was probably painted on Achill Island. This classic painting depicts simple and beautiful white washed cottages, their windows painted a contrasting red, in a West of Ireland rural landscape. Yet for all its representation of stereotypical images of Irish cottage life, the painting contains an element of pathos, with the solitary figure of the man standing behind the gate, as the evening star gleams behind him low on the horizon and night falls, the man’s face illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun.
