The Lough Derg Pike: Life size, with Relics
Lough Derg Pike is, in many ways, a key work in Cooke's oeuvre, combining a lush romantic sensitivity with a keen scientific interest in marine life. This memorable catch in the annals of Irish fishing was five feet in length and was caught in Lough Derg. The pike is painted life-size, the actual fish being preserved in a pub in county Clare. A predella panel below the painting contains artifacts from the period, including a fishing rod.
