Odeon Cinema, Merrion Centre1970. View of the ?100,000 Odeon in 1970 before it was enclosed within the Merrion Centre. It was the first cinema to be built in Leeds since the 1930s and the architects were Gillinson and Barnett. The 900 seater cinema opened on Monday 17th August 1964 with a showing of 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' starring Sophia Loren, Alec Guiness, James Mason and Christopher Plummer. It closed on Saturday 1st October 1977, thirteen years later, and the final film was 'Gone with the Wind'starring Vivien Leigh opposite Clark Gable. In this image the cinema is advertising 'on the giant cinema screen' Ben Hur with Charlton Heston and Jack Hawkins. There is a Tesco store beneath.
