house

houseDetached five-bay single-storey lobby entry thatched house with dormer attic, extant 1840. Modified with replacement single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch added to centre [CEMA]. Hipped roof overhanging gablets to window openings to dormer attic with iron mesh-covered oat thatch, exposed hazel lattice stretchers to ridge having exposed scallops, cement rendered chimney stack having red brick stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, decorative timber bargeboards to gablets below rendered coping rising to finials to apexes, and exposed hazel stretchers to eaves having exposed scallops. Gritdashed roughcast battered walls on rendered plinth with rendered strips to corners. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills, rendered surrounds, and two-over-two timber sash windows. Set back from road in own grounds on a slightly elevated site [OS].APPRAISAL:A house of modest size recognised as an integral component of the vernacular legacy of south County Wexford by such attributes as the rectilinear lobby entry plan form centred on an expressed, albeit replacement porch, the construction in unrefined local materials displaying a feint battered profile, and the high pitched roof retaining an indigenous oat thatch finish: meanwhile, the near-symmetrical pattern of the openings indicates an awareness of, or aspirations to contemporary sophisticated architectural trends while decorative timber work embellishments not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the composition, but likely represent a later Victorian or Edwardian intervention. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing prevail together with substantial quantities of the historic or original fabric, thus upholding the character or integrity of a house making a pleasing visual statement overlooking Orristown Crossroads.
